Assisted Living Transitions in Star
Help moving to assisted living for Star families.
Delivering fresh starts since 2022
Star is one of the fastest-growing cities in the state, and most of the housing stock reflects that. Neighborhoods like Heron River, Movado Estates, Skybreak, and Star River Ranch went in over the last decade or so, while a smaller number of larger parcels along the Boise River still carry the older rural-residential feel, some set up for horses or a hobby farm.
That mix matters when you're helping a parent or relative move into assisted living. What you find inside a newer build in one of Star's planned subdivisions tends to look different from what turns up on an acreage lot near the river. Either way, you're sorting through someone's life on a timeline you didn't choose, and it helps to know what's common here, where it all actually goes, and how the local calendar can work for or against you.
What Usually Turns Up
In Star's newer subdivisions, you're less likely to find generations of stuff and more likely to find furniture and appliances that are still in decent shape, plus boxed-up seasonal items and home office equipment. On the larger rural-residential parcels along the river, add in tools, tack, and outbuilding contents that come with acreage living.
A good chunk of what you clear out doesn't have to end up in a landfill at all.
- Furniture and mattresses still usable — worth a donation pickup before anything else
- Kitchen appliances and electronics — some take a Freon fee, some are e-waste
- Hobby farm, garden, or horse-related gear on acreage lots
- Scrap metal and clean wood — both recyclable rather than trashed
- Seasonal and holiday boxes that build up fast in a long-term home
- Shed or outbuilding contents on the river-corridor properties
Where It Actually Goes
Material leaving a Star property generally heads to the Ada County Landfill at Hidden Hollow or to the Meridian Transfer Station, both reached off Seamans Gulch Road via Hwy 44 or Hwy 55. Each accepts regular trash, construction debris, yard waste, mattresses, scrap metal, clean wood, concrete, and e-waste. Tires and Freon-containing appliances go through for a fee, and large metal items can go through free at the transfer station.
What they won't take matters just as much for sorting: out-of-county waste, hazardous materials, treated or painted wood meant for diversion, and untitled campers, trailers, or boats. Loads also need to be tarped or strapped before they're accepted, and both sites run on posted hours, so a load that isn't sorted ahead of time can turn into a second trip.
Working Around Star's Clean-Up Weeks
Star runs two unlimited clean-up weeks each year — one the first full week of April, one the first full week after Christmas — when bulky items and non-Freon appliances can go out curbside at no extra charge. If a transition happens to fall near one of those windows, it's worth timing the bulk of the haul to take advantage of it.
Outside those weeks, bulky item pickup still runs, but it has to be scheduled ahead and set out visibly on trash day, with Freon units handled separately after collection. Yard debris has its own rhythm too, limited mostly to a compost cart with a little overflow room, so a cleanout that includes a lot of yard material is easier to plan outside of peak yard-waste season.
A lot of what makes an assisted living transition in Star manageable comes down to sorting early, knowing what the local transfer sites will and won't take, and lining up timing with the city's clean-up weeks when you can.
